KARLA:

KARLA, BHAJA AND BEDSA CA YES The 18 caves at Bhaja, near Lonavala belong to the Hinayana phase . They were excavated during 2nd century BC. The main cave (No.12) is a Chaitya with an interesting ribbed ceiling and beautiful stone columns that support the semi-circular front The caves at Bedsa are l5km away from the Karla & Bhaja caves. Karla caves, as the historian J.C. Harle observes are the supreme achievement of the early cave temple excavation. The wooden ribbed ceiling is believed to be original i.e nearly 2000 yeras old.
