Shekhavati

Often called the'open air art gallery of Rajasthan', the region of medeival shekhavati comrpises of the present day districts of Sikar and Jhunjhunu. Some important havelies can be found in Sikar, Nawalgarh, Dundlod, Lachmangarh, Mandawa and Mahansar. Shekhawati translates literally into " The land of Shekha's clan" and owes its name to Raoshekha (1433-1488), a cousin of the Kachchawahas of Jaipur. However,the high quality frescoes which this region is particularly famous for dates between 1750 and 1930. Shekhwati also means the garden of Shekha and it is not a single village or town but a large area in North-Eastern Rajasthan Which lies between Bikaner, Jaipur & Delhi. Shekhwati is known the world over for its exquisite frescoes that adorn the walls and the ceilings of the building here. Called an open-air museum, no where else in the world is there such as large concentration of frescoes as in Shekhavati.
