General Information

Deogarh is situated on the right banks of the Betwa river at the end of the Lalitpur range of  hills. The cliffs, immediately overhanging the banks rise to a height of 300f and form a long steep ridge of red sandstone. Deogarh is of great antiquarian, epigraphical and archaeological importance and has figured in the history of the Guptas, the Gujaras the Pratiharas, the Muslim rulers of Delhi, and Kalpi, the Marathas and the British. The thickly forested hills around Deogarh harbours a variety of wildlife.

 Sightseeing

Dashavatar Temple

This fine Vishnu temple belongs to the Gupta period and is noted for being the first northern Indian temple with shikharas or spire, Only the lower part of shikharas  remains today. 

 
Jain Shrines

There are 31 Jain Temples of the later date. The site was a jain centre from the post -Gupat times up to the 17th century. Panels depicting scenes from Jain mythology, Tirthankara images , a Manastambha, Ayagapatta, Sarvato Bhadra pratima and Sahastrakuta are found here. 

 
Deogarh Archaeological Museum

The museum has fine collection of sculptures.

 

Excursions

 Chanderi

The town is famous for gaossamer Chanderi Sarees. It has also some of the finest examples of Bundela, Rajput and Malwa Sultanate architecture. A magnificent Mughal  fort dominates the skyline of this old interesting town.

 

 Barua Sagar

The town situated on the road to Khajuraho, is named after Barua Sagar Tal, a large lake created about 260 years ago when Raja Udit Singh of Orchha built the embanked. The Barua Sagar Fort, pictuersque and located at a height, commands an excellent view of the lake and surroundings landscape.
