History |
|
Uttaranchal is an amalgamation of the two hilly divisions
of former Uttar Pradesh, Kumaon and Garhwal, the regions that are known
according to Hindu legends as Devbhoomi (land of the gods). Uttaranchal
finds mention in the ancient Hindu scriptures as Kedarkhand, Manakhand and
Himavat. The first known inhabitants of the UP Hills were the Kuninda in the
second century B.C, who had a close affinity with contemporary Indo-Greek
civilization.
Since Independence, Garhwal and Kumaon were part of Uttar Pardesh and in
November 1999, a new state was created, Uttaranchal, 27th state of
India. |
